How Social Anxiety affects a person’s life
According to the Anxiety Disorders Association of America, “thirty-six percent of people with social anxiety disorder report symptoms for ten or more years before seeking help”. Social anxiety also known as social phobia is not to be taken lightly. It often affects multiple aspects of a person’s life. This makes it difficult for someone with social anxiety to have a normal daily pattern. Social anxiety can affect health, relationships, daily performance, emotions, and behavior. Social anxiety can affect a person’s health and form bad habits. A person suffering from social anxiety may have trouble falling asleep and frequently wake up throughout the night. Thus causing a person to develop insomnia. A lot of the time a person with social anxiety may have trouble falling asleep due to the stress of an upcoming social event. Having bad sleeping patterns such as these can wear a person’s body down and create serious health problems (Denkmire and Perritano 7). Individuals with social phobia tend to over analyze or over think simple situations which can cause a large amount of stress when done every day. Heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure are a few serious side effects associated with the stress that accompanies social anxiety. Social anxiety increases a person’s chances of developing high blood pressure. An example of a bad habit that someone suffering from social anxiety can form is drug abuse. Major depression is often associated with social anxiety which can contribute to the abuse of drugs. People with social anxiety are more likely to abuse substances due to shyness and nervousness. A person suffering from this may become afraid to live in their world of fear. Some start to use substances to escape from reality. Then, they start to realize that it is easier to do every day normal activities while intoxicated in their “dream state.” Everything becomes easier to do for them and the abusing of substances begins. Though alcohol may temporally relief the symptoms of anxiety shortly after its use anxiety will worsen. All drugs have the ability to potentially increase the anxiety symptoms. Caffeine is a stimulant that increases heart rate. Some seem to think that caffeine helps their social anxiety. However, this is just a temporary affect that will slowly wear off. Stimulants can be especially dangerous for someone who already suffers with social anxiety. The use of stimulants can cause anxiety when taken in large amounts or when withdrawal symptoms occur. The continued use of alcohol and drugs can cause permanent damage such as liver damage and respiratory issues. In some cases a person can over dose and die. Social anxiety doesn’t just damage a person’s body, but it can damage relationships as well. A person with social anxiety may have low self-esteem. It is not uncommon for someone with social anxiety to feel the need to get married right away. Often a person has only been in a few relationships and when they are comfortable they start to push marriage. People with social anxiety tend to have trouble with the people that are closest to them. It is common for longtime friendship to suddenly get worse or completely change. This may happen at random and the person suffering may lie about the reason things have changed. A person with this disorder may have enjoyed going out and having fun in the past. However now they might find themselves sitting at home and wanting to avoid social activities. They might make up excuses as to why they are not able to attend social events (Murray and Walker 151). Social anxiety instills a lot of fear into a person’s personality and life style. Fear can cause a negative impact on a person’s performance.
